Receiving the appropriate treatment is a shared responsibility between you and your doctor. To make the most of your appointment time, it’s crucial to adhere to the following guidelines:
Take Note of Your Symptoms
Be attentive to your symptoms and make an effort to record them. A comprehensive understanding of your symptoms is essential for the doctor to accurately recommend the suitable treatment. This should encompass any uncertainties you might have.
Bring Your Medical History Details
Compile a comprehensive record of your medical history, encompassing your current medications as well as past ones. Equipping your physician with this information will facilitate accurate diagnosis. Additionally, remember to carry medical test reports conducted within the last year.
Provide Health History of Close Family Members
This list should encompass siblings, parents, grandparents, uncles, and even children. Familiarizing your physician with your family’s health history contributes to more precise diagnosis.
Carry Personal Identification
This should include your proof of address and hospital ID. If you possess a hospital ID, presenting it can potentially waive registration fees. Furthermore, your hospital ID can provide your physician with details about previous treatments received at the hospital.
Above all, maintain transparency with your physician and adhere to the prescribed treatment plan. Most importantly, ensure punctuality for your appointment.
Dietary Guidelines
Proper nourishment plays a pivotal role both before and after any medical procedure. Our dietitian will meet with you to assist in devising a personalized diet plan. We advise a reduction in caffeine consumption both before and for a duration of 2 weeks post-procedure.
Emphasis is placed on a diet rich in protein.
For those adhering to a vegetarian lifestyle, suitable sources include tofu, chickpeas (Sundal), and green leafy vegetables.
Due to medication effects and limited mobility during the initial 2 weeks following the procedure, it’s anticipated that constipation might occur. Although we administer stool softeners post-procedure, we recommend a high-fiber diet for the first 2 weeks.
Abstain from alcohol for 1 week preceding the surgery and 3 weeks following it, as it could potentially interact with prescribed medications.
If you are a smoker, it is advisable to cease smoking 4 weeks prior to the surgery and continue abstaining for four weeks post-surgery. Research has demonstrated that smokers face an increased risk of wound infections and delayed wound healing.
- Simplify Your Living Space
- Prepare your home to accommodate your post-surgery needs.
- Organize your furniture to avoid obstructing pathways to essential areas.
- Eliminate sharp corners in your living space.
- Remove rugs and unneeded electrical cords.
- Enhance Safety Against Falls
- Given the potential for balance issues after a total knee replacement, it’s crucial to minimize fall risks.
- Install handrails, especially in the bathroom.
- Consider using a raised toilet seat.
- Place handrails near the shower and toilet.
- Incorporate textured surfaces on slippery floors.
- Use walking aids consistently until your stability improves.
- Install nightlights for better visibility.
- Set Up Your Recovery Zone
- Ensure these essentials are easily accessible:
- Eyeglasses
- Phone or cellphone (and charger)
- TV remote control
- Tablet
- Reading materials
- Medications and tissues
- Water bottle
- Snacks
- Above all, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Directly after the surgery, having someone present can be extremely beneficial. Consider having a friend or family member stay with you during the initial recovery phase, or arrange for professional in-home care. Even if you have a spouse or family member living with you, having an extra set of hands available for help is always a prudent choice
